Thwaites Glacier, Antarctica

​Research Description
To understand how warm waters are affecting one of Antarctica's fastest retreating glaciers, Thwaites Glacier, at the grounding line - the point where glaciers transition from resting on bedrock to encounter the ocean. The collaborative effort from those involved will reduce uncertainty in projections of sea level rise due to the ongoing retreat of Thwaites.

Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica

Research Description
To study the ocean cavity at the grounding line of Ross Ice Shelf, where it meets the Kamb Ice Stream. This is a very unique location, because the Kamb Ice Stream is not moving near its grounding line; it is stagnant. Two separate locations along the ~200 km grounding line were investigated, which showed very different ocean properties. Ongoing research will characterize the physical processes leading to these differences and their impact on the Ross Ice Shelf and Kamb Ice Stream.

Petermann Gletscher Ice Shelf, Greenland

Research Description
To understand the ocean and atmospheric forcing that has driven the ice shelf of Petermann Gletscher to retreat and accelerate in the last decade. Additionally, to understand the dynamics of seasonal forcing on glacier melting, which is a major factor affecting glaciers all around Greenland.
